Happy Step-Friend’s Day

May 8, 2009

A couple of years ago Ava started giving Raleigh (Brent’s ex-wife) a Mother’s Day card.  When I inquired why she wanted to do this, she explained very matter-of-factly, “Because she’s my step-mom and I love her.”

When I told Ava that Raleigh was actually not her step-mother, the look on her face was full of such shock and disbelief that instead of risking a meltdown and trying to explain how our blended family works in the middle of the greeting card aisle of the grocery store, I just put her chosen card in my shopping cart and moved on.

That night at bedtime, Ava and I finished the step-mother conversation.  And while she finally understood our family dynamic, her intention remained.

“Well,” she said, “Raleigh is my step-friend and she’s a mom, so it still counts.”

Yes it does.
